On October 3, 2008, the SW Journal of International Law sponsored a symposium titled “Arctic Sovereignty: Cold Facts, Hot Issues.”

Due to receding ice in the Arctic, a new shipping route may become possible, as well as access to large amounts of oil and gas reserves.  As a result, fear exists that there will be a race by Canada, the U.S., Russia and other nations to claim sovereignty over the natural resources that exist there.
